I’ve been painting for a long time. As a student at Rutgers in the sixties, my teachers were Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Watts and others. Later, I was generously mentored by George Segal. I am grateful to all of them, and for the sense of openness of possibility which was part of the time and the environment.
From almost the beginning, I knew I wanted to focus on figure painting. More recently, I’ve turned to a kind of still life painting, the most abstract of the representational genres. I have used photography as an intermediate medium for my paintings from very early on, for convenience and reliability. I’ve always made my own photos, first with film, and later digitally, because I knew I needed to find my own way of looking. The play between the illusion of volume and deep space and the reality of paint manipulation continues to fascinate me. |
